Boutwell Farms provides local families with high quality food using sustainable agricultural practices.    Sustainable means that we use natural, replenishable resources that  improve the environment in order to grow healthier food.    Building a better environment requires respect for the  seasons and cycles of our area, the character of our soils, the personalities of native plant varieties and the traits of animals adapted to our region.

The food we grow nourishes our bodies.  To build a family in the midst of nature's story nourishes our souls.     Today almost 70% of our population lives in urban areas.   This keeps our urban neighbors too far from the lessons that come only through the sounds, smells, temperatures and slowly unfolding stories of the plants and animals around us.   Become a part of the Boutwell Farm Community and let us share these stories with you.

Did you know that Alabama is giving away a $4,000,000,000 industry by not building a local food economy?  Alabama is going to eat.  We are spending that money now but sending it somewhere else.  Growing a local food economy would create jobs and strengthen jobs that we already have.  Building a local food economy benefits all of us.  Join the  Boutwell Farm Community to see how you can be a part of fixing that.

Who will feed your children?

The average age of a food producer today is 55-62 years old depending where you live.   Only 1% of our workforce grows food for a full time living.  Young people are not entering this profession.  We need the best and brightest growing sustainable foods locally.  The recruiting trends are not good.  Most people today are 3-5 generations removed from farm life.   There are very few skilled food craftsmen left to pass on the secrets of a life's work and mentor a new generation.

The average distance food travels to your plate is 1800 miles in season.  Out of season it can be up to 5000 miles.  Food imports are growing by 12% per year.   The average carrying capacity of America's cities today is 5%.  That means that in the event of a transportation disruption only 5% of the people in that city have access to food.   Alabama has many areas that are much less than 5%.   Yet, we can grow many, many things.

Something must be done.   We the Boutwell family are working hard to improve our food region.  You can do the same no matter where you live.    There is much that you can do.   Join our the Boutwell Farm Community to learn what you can do right where you are.  Their future is in our hands.
